Sensor nodes

Noskill:

The goal is to have a working, mesh network of sensors (i.e. light, temperature, presence) and actuators (motors to open / close a window, turn lights on and off, etc.).
The solution is centred around a raspberry pi that has a NRF24L01+ chip, and works as a central point for gathering all of the data received via the radio. It then builds a webpage transmitting the data in real time and then rules are applied so that we can say, activate one motor if the value of a sensor is below 20°
The nodes are based on the ATTiny85 AVR micro-controller and another NRF24L01+ chip.

Parts
* Raspberry Pi
* x + 1 NRF24L10+ chips, where x is the number of nodes
* x ATTiny
* Tool to flash the ATTiny, this can either be an arduino (using the Arduino as ISP sketch) or a dedicated AVR USB programmer

Sensors
Here is a list of the sensors I made/will made, complete with Kicad files (schematics and PCB layouts)

Light Sensor
Uses a light dependant resistor
(todo)

Temperature & Humidity
(todo)
Presence (PIR)
(todo)
Gaz
(todo)
Piezo
(todo)
Sound
(todo)

Actuators
RGB Led strip
Be able to change the color
Window opening
Use a motor to open / close a window
Blinders
(todo)
Sound
(todo)

Code
On the final destination node (raspi): There will be 2 parts of code running in parallel. The first one will get the values through the NRF24L01+ and parse them into a json file that will be used for a web interface. The other part will allow the dynamic creation of rules that have to be applied (e.g. turn on the lights if the presence sensor activates, etc.).

Transmission
The radio packets contains 4 values to transmit:
* The ID of the node (unsigned int_8) -> max nodes = 255
* The type of value (temperature/presence/humidity/light) or the type of "activator" (blinders/doors/lights)
* The value to transmit as a signed int8_t (from -128 to 127) (Note: maybe this is not enough, try other sizes)

Notes:

The next step will be to add mesh-networking capabilities by sending a broadcast packet and waiting for the reply from the others nodes, and create a table of reachable nodes.

It would be nice to add some randomness in the delays of transmission otherwise we will only receive packets from nodes emitting at a precise moment.

Also, at the moment the packets are received in a dumb fashion, so we are not sure if the values will correctly update. We could correct this by adding a fifo queue on the receiving node (the raspi) and treat the packets one by one, not ignoring some while the last packet is treated.

* x + 1 NRF24L10+ chips, where x is the number of nodes
* x ATTiny
* Tool to flash the ATTiny, this can either be an arduino (using the Arduino as ISP sketch) or a dedicated AVR USB programmer

Sensors
Here is a list of the sensors I made/will made, complete with Kicad files (schematics and PCB layouts)

It would be nice to add some randomness in the delays of transmission otherwise we will only receive packets from nodes emitting at a precise moment
Also, at the moment the packets are received in a dumb fashion, so we are not sure if the values will correctly update. We could correct this by adding a fifo queue on the receiving node (the raspi) and treat the packets one by one, not ignoring some while the last packet is treated.

Description

In English :

After a pause, ElectroJam will resume in 2015. The next one will be on the : TBD

So what is this Electrojam at Fixme? It's a night dedicated to bringing our electronics, software, and hardware knowledge together, with the goal to create a minimal viable product by the end of the night. Think of it as a hackathon to make something awesome. Pizza included.

Previous events : ElectroJam1 // ElectroJam2 // ElectroJam3 // ElectroJam4

Schedule
* DATE : The Friday : 09 January 2015 (le vendredi 09.01.2015)
* Time : from 20:00

Goal

In English :

The idea behind the event is that you come and use the best of what Fixme offers, in order to create, continue, or finish (a) project(s) throughout the night; or to simply hang out and express your raw passion for technology. You'll have lots of components, parts, tools, and stuff others have bought, in order to help you achieve, or even surpass your goals.

Example activities :
---------------------
* Programming (uC, uP, web page, script,...)
* Electronics (making a prototype on protoboard or on PCB; using software such as KICAD, SCILABS, ... discover electronics components and their inner workings with their datasheets)
* Mechanical (3D printing, laser cutting, plebeian cutting, sawing, drilling,... )
* People (share knowledge, find out others, ...)

Obstacles
* Your limits !!!
Description
A logical extension to the Kicad workshop (electronics design) is to realize the designed PCB.
There are 3 ways to produce PCBs at FIXME (with the required components):
* PCB Milling with a CNC Router
* PCB Etching using toner transfer method
* PCB Etching using the photosensitive positive method

Goal
* Make custom PCBs for FIXME members and projects.

Obstacles
PCB Milling with a CNC Router:
* Cost
* Make a lot of dust

PCB Etching using toner transfer method:
* Use chemicals requiring precautions for use

PCB Etching using the photosensitive positive method:
* Use chemicals requiring precautions for use
* Need an insolation box
* Number of step for the process

Components
* Iron(III) chloride / Perchlorure de fer Corrosive!
or
* HCl + H2O2 / Acide chlorydrique + Peroxyde d'Hydrogène (eau oxygénée) => HCl+H2O2 method on Hackaday

"Toner transfer" PCB etching
* http://www.riccibitti.com/pcb/pcb.htm
* Test print design :

Photoresist PCB Etching
Mainly inspired from

Parts
* Uv light (UV LED strip or DIY UV LED fixture?)
* Pre-coated photoresist positive pcb
* Lye (NaOH)
* Ammonium persulfate (or Ferric Chloride, available at Fixme hackerspace)

PCB Layout
The pcb layout should be the positive (black parts are where copper will stay) and *mirrored* image, full size (1:1) of the layout.

This layout is printed on standard paper with a laser printer (or copier) and set the toner density to the maximum value. This will make the black part really dark so the light can not pass trough.

The paper is then drenched in a 'drying' oil (like sunflower seed oil). This will make the white parts of the paper transparent. Remove the extra oil carefully.

Exposition
Remove the plastic protection on the PCB. Place the printed side of the layout against the copper side of the PCB. Remove the air bubbles captured under the greased paper

Place the PCB & Layout inside the exposure box. Then let the UV light do the work for 2 minutes 30 seconds This is a completely arbitrary timing, we should test different values

Remove the PCB & Layout from the exposure box

Remove the the layout paper (if you want to reuse it, you can dry it)

Development
We use a 1% Lye (Sodium Hydroxide = NaOH) solution for development. (Add 10 grams of Lye to a liter of water)

To know if the development process is finished, take a look to the traces. They should be clearly distinguishable.

Etching
The etching solution is a 200g/L ammonium persulfate mix (or Ferric Chloride).

The etching process can take to over an hour. To speed up this shit, you can add heat and/or bubbles to the solution.

The solution should take a blue to deep blue hue.

The reaction is (NH_4)_2 S_ 2 O_8 -> CuSO4 + (NH4)_2 SO. The resultant liquid is less harmful than ferric chloride but should still be treated with other chemical waste

Noskill: /* Parts needed */ -> mechanical

Description
Build a plastic recycling machine to make 3D printable filament for the Ultimaker and other people's printers.

First (optional) step of the process is to melt plastic parts (such as bottle caps, failed prints, packages) into plastic pellets. This can be done by putting parts inside a heating recipient having a hole at the bottom. An irregular thread of material will come out and be sliced into small pellets.

Next step is to transform pellets or plastic parts (if they are small enough) into 3D-printable filament. This is performed by the extruder. An extruder is constructed from essentially two parts: a feeding mechanism, and a heater - chopped plastic parts or pellets are fed from a container into the feeding mechanism, which then pushes the plastic slowly through the heater to create the filament.

__TOC__

Goal
* Recycle failed/old prints and extruded plastic
* Recycle other plastics, such as PET bottles (caps), etc
* Experiment with new colors and materials

Obstacles
* Get a filament of repeatable thickness
* More complex = more difficult
* Ventilation preferable for ABS

Progression
* 2013/11/22 - Starting experiments :).
* 2013/11/27 - Measure the temperature we can have with the current setup. Are there other ways to use the nichrome wire (on the extrusion head/on the tube/both) ? Also start experiments for the part that will transform HDPE into pellets (shattering vs melting i.e.). What's the best way to have both parts (recycling and filament making) in the same machine ? Also: plans, plans, plans - use a paper shredder to break used and new plastic into small bits.
* 2014/01/17 - Added a metal top on the end with a 3mm brass extrusion nozzle soldered to it. Next step is adding motorization and automation (i.e. temperature regulation)
* 2014/01/30 - A more polished version of the metal parts will be made by User:noskill's school polymecanics. The heated part and the nozzle will be removable.
* 2014/03/10 - Received the stepper motor and the arduino motor shield. Now the mechanics will make a first prototype of the machine in a few days. Also tested the temperature sensor under "real" conditions (~200°c) and worked perfectly.
* 2014/04/01 - The prototype is done ! And it's not even an April fools joke !
* 2014/06/11 - The motor used is not powerful enough in the current setup. Next step is to try adding a screw trough the rotor to get more torque and eventually to buy a new motor (DC, stepper ?).
Plastic recycling

Noskill: /* Progression */

* Ventilation preferable for ABS

Winder for extruded plastic. See this video for explanation.

Source files on Thingiverse, and assembly instructions here. They sell these for 159$ but seeing as we can 3D print many parts at fixme and laser cut other parts at PTL, total cost should be less than a 3rd of that.

Progression
* 2013/11/22 - Starting experiments :).

Goal
* Recycle failed/old prints and extruded plastic
* Recycle other plastics, such as PET bottles (caps), etc
* Experiment with new colors and materials
Obstacles
* Get a filament of repeatable thickness
* More complex = more difficult

Noskill: /* Parts needed */

* Ventilation preferable for ABS

|-
| Tube
| Part where the material will flow trough. Which material should we use ? (Aluminium/ (Stainless) steel) ?
Also we will have to be able to dig holes to put the temp sensors inside.
| Got ~1.5 m of dia. 20mm aluminum / 1.5mm thick
|-
| Auger
| Screw pushing the material
| Just bought one of those on Ebay
|-
| Motor
| Makes stuff move
| Needed
|-
| Heating element
| Nichrome wire ? Ceramic heaters ? Quite cheap on ebay.
This will be controlled by a thermostat (when the tx is above a defined point we shut it down).

Find a way to attach this (high-temp resistant tape ?) and isolate from the outside.
| Bought 3.048m of G28 nichrome wire.
|-
| Thermometers
| Get the internal temperature in different places of the tube (rear, middle and nose for example).
| Got 1 DS18B20
|-
| Extrusion nozzle
| Transforms the heated plastic into a regular filament suitable for the printer.
